Software Gets Optimized with Asset Management

By Marie Lingblom

When it comes to optimizing software delivery, organizations focused on streamlining the flow of information will be most successful removing critical bottlenecks. Necessary tools to help achieve this goal include the use of automation and a trusted asset library.

Technologies such as virtualization and cloud computing have added complexities to IT environments. Many organizations have accelerated the pace of software delivery under pressure to find flexibility in these new environments. Acceleration without proper planning and shared business objectives, however, doesn’t result in improved agility.

Enhanced productivity, repeatability and reliability, say some technologists, lie in customized solutions and tailored best practices. And that, they say, can provide a “single source of truth,” automate processes, and dramatically improve efficiency and costs.

IBM IT asset managers offer some thoughts on how to help organizations get to this “single source of truth:”

• Optimize software licenses and reduce likelihood of overbuying as well as fines due to under-licensing.
• Help control the cost of IT assets with a single solution that tracks and manages your hardware, software and related information throughout their life cycle.
• Closely align IT with business requirements through IT asset cost and usage information.
• Reduce time, cost and risk associated with compliance audits through comprehensive software license management.
• Relevant vendor, contract, lease, warranty and license data will minimize procurement and maintenance expenses and helps negotiate contract renewals.
• Improve service desk quality and incident resolution time with accurate IT asset information.

There’s agreement among industry watchers that a collaborative approach to design, development and deployment helps improve responsiveness to business needs. That includes leveraging an open, modular, integrated environment and improving quality by standardizing on a common set of tools, components and best practices for all platforms.

That, in turn, leads to faster ROI through flexible reuse and optimization of core assets and better productivity via automation.

Automation, deployment and asset management, cloud computing and other related topics are high on the agenda at IBM Innovate2012 in Orlando, June 3-7. Click here for more information or to register for the IBM Innovate2012.
